Final project

      Finally, I finish the final project. The process, with many difficulties, is very hard. But I have overcome them one by one. Although it is 4:28 am now, I feel a great sense of achievement.
      Like I mentioned in the last blog, it is a hard job to decide what should I do for the final project. Because "you can do anything you want unless it is illegal" means a very big range. Images, sound and videos are all fine for this project. So many things came to my mind at first, I even had the idea to make a film! But then I realized some of them are just my imaginations. I cut some of my ideas and went back to rethink our past projects. I found that I was still interested in the "special ability" project, so I decided to redo this one as my final project through a video. Because video is a combination of images and sound, it is the best way to tell a story through a video. And I have never made a video before, it is also a challenge for me.
      When I start to work on the project, I first think of which ability is my favorite if I can have it in real life. Destroy the universe? Dominate earth? Be a bank(with unlimited money)?,no. These are too big. I just need something small but significant. I found the ability I look for from an article on a Chinese magazine some days later. The article is called "10 things a person should do in his life", which is about dreams. Every one have his dreams, so do I. Since I can get a special ability in this project, why don't I make my dreams come true by the ability?  Finally I found the best ability to me for my dreams, also I think it is the best one for anyone's dreams. "Teleportation". I can get everywhere I want at any time by this ability free.
      The biggest difficulties appeared in the process of making the project. I don't use imovie as my tool because I have to do my work in library and I am an apple black(The people who hate apple). I use photoshop and ulead videostudio and formatfactory this time. I took a picture of myself and take my outline out from the whole picture by photoshop. Then I download 5 videos from youtube which are all related to my dreams. I convert them from mp4 to mpg by formatfactory. Then I combine myself to the videos in ulead. The final work is just like all of my dreams come true by the ability of teleportation. It sounds easy to do the work by my description in this way. But the process is really hard, I have no knowledge of these softwares at all at first. It takes a long time to figure out the problems.
       When I finally finish the project, I feel a great sense of achievement. Making a video is hard in my mind in the past. But now I feel like it is not that hard as I thought before. I am 100% satisfied with the project! Although someone may think it is bored, I put a lot of effort into it and tried my best to think and practice. I think it is enough because I have learned much from this project and this class. I am very happy with it!
 

Final project brainstorming

    When first saw the instructions of the final project, I thought it must be a easy work because there are  not may  constraints and we can do whatever we want, images, sounds or videos. But after few days careful thought, I found it seems not that easy as I first thought. Because no limitation means I can do everything I like in my mind, which is very hard to decide. I need to choose a direction first.
     Finally I decide to try something new, that is, to do the final project as a video. And I will choose the topic from mp5. First I really like the project because I truly  feel like I become the character in the animation through photoshop with his special ability, secondly I chose to get a ability which is not useful in real life just because I love the one who has it, so this time I will find something I am really interested in and try to get some new abilities in real life.
     I believe this will be a wonderful experience for me because this is the first time I try to make a real video and edit it.

  It is a good experience to read this article because I also have the same feeling as the author when I first met a blind person who I need to communicate with. It was just awkward at first because I was afraid of using wrong words or something which is inappropriate to a blind person. But then I feel there are almost no difference between normal people and them, they are very kind to others and very curious to the world. We have a good talking that day which impressed me very much. In this article, I can easily understand the author's feeling in the whole article, also his angry on the relationship between his wife and the blind person, though I have no wife:/. And I think the cathedral part is really a very good idea, language is weak sometime, especially to blind people. I will try to help them draw something in the future if I have the chance with them again. And another thing I would like to say is, dinner is always a good way to make you get close to somebody.

      I choose fold as my action word because I think it is interesting. Usually we use the word fold on some soft objects like paper. And in common sense , we cannot fold somthing hard. So the limitation offers me the oppotunities to do some interesting work with photoshop.
      I choose my cup as my day-to-day basis. When I see the assignment asks me to find something I use everyday but do not give much thought to,   I look around all the stuff on my table and choose the cup. Accurately I use the cup around every 30 minutes for water, it is so important to me but I usually not pay much attention to it.
      First I take a picture of my cup and put it into photoshop. I divide the cup into 5 parts and create 5 new layers for them. For each part, I use distort tool from edit-transform to change it from rectangle to parellelogram. That is the way I get my final work. It is not obvious to tell the cup is folded but I think the way I go through is right, I just need to learn more tools and be more skillful.  But I like my work and I gain much from the process.

  The first character came to my mind when I saw the assignment is Archer, which is from an animation called fate/stay night. He is my favorite male character in all the virtual characters from all the animations I have watched. I like the way he behaved and I am encouraged by his growth experience so much, btw I also like his girlfriend:P.

  And I think the coooooolest thing on him is his hougu, which is also called "Noble Phantasm" in the animation. It is like the weapon of the servant(Archer) and it is also a symbol of hero. The name of the hougu of Archer is called "Unlimited blade works".  Archer has the ability to make the imaginations in his mind become real swords which relies on the sword shell of King Arthur in his body. And when he maxes this ability, an natural barrier made by swords will be created by him. There are also a part of words for him to sing when he uses his hougu.

I am crazy about the words above and his hougu. So if I have the chance to be another man, I will choose to be Archer so that I can also use this hougu. That is why my work is about unlimited blade works. I just put myself on ohio stadium( honestly I do not like this one to be the barrier but I cannot find a place wider than this in campus) and copy many swords from the animation. The black one is what I summon and it is also one of the two main weapons of Archer. I like my work; it looks nice and the stadium looks like a real battleground expect my bad pose..And I would put the incantation into the image if there is more space for me to use.

  I really do not enjoy such a long speech. I feel tired to listen to a people you do not know anything about and try to understand his words sentence by sentence. They grow up in different environment and they have different life experience, so the students cannot understand his speech or advise at all.  If anyone says he knows what the author tries to explain and he gets help from the author' words. Then I can say that he even does not know himself and what is really helpful to him. The experience you get from failure will make you grow up, but these words won't. It is a waste of time to listen to a elder's life experience.
  But  his topic is not bored, I agree that life will become more and more flat and people will be more and more tired as the time goes by. Like the lyrics from "You only live once"(Suicide Silence) said"You only live once so just go fucking nuts", well it is a joke..So it is important to keep your passion on something and keep a good mood. For me, I will always stay in the second dimension( the world of Japanese animation) no matter if the life is hard or very hard. I believe the characters and plots will cure me from the pollution world.  And I think every one have to find something he is interested and let it relax your life. This is water and what your life will be is up to you

  I am a big fan of basketball game on computer and I also like to play basketball with my friends in reality. So in picture 1and2 I just combine the real basketball court with my computer, I think this couldn't be better to represent my identity. In addition, there is a defect that I cannnot choose OSU basketball team in the famous basketball games. So I put a OSU basketball logo in each picture to make it look like a game, you can also see loading bar, the scores and a pause button in the pictures.

  I hope the viewers would be interested in my idea and intend to play the game if it is a real game. But if you engage in deep thought, you may find the world we live is also a big game and we may be controled to walk, to ear and to study by somebody, like the god by a little controller. Because the universe is too big and humans are too small and we still have lots of unknown today. That is the significance of image3. The white controller stands for the administrator of the earth.

  The author talks about life and art in this article. I agree with his opinion of the relationship between art and life very much that we cannot break art away from life. This makes me recall a story when I was in high school. We were asked to write a 600 words essay in the last part of every chinese writing exam and it was wroth 60/150 points. In china, exam scores are even more important to students and their families than their lives. So we did our best to avoid losing every point. And how to get a high grade in that essay in a big part of our lessons. Basically there are two opinions, one is to use huge numbers of rhetoric in each sentence to make the essay full of flowery ornate terms and another one is to write a true story simply but we will put more of our emotion in the essay than the first method. I prefer the latter one, I do not like to decorate a essay much on rhetoric and what I want is to let the audience feel what I feel and get touched by my story. I think that is art. But the ones who use the former method would get a high grade, I think that is exactly the disadvantage of chinese education. Anyway, this article just let me recall the experience again, I like it.

The Bible: I put it on my night table and read it everyday. If my house catch on fire I will grab it the first time because it is small, light and it stands for Jesus Christ and God.
The glasses: I have a high myopia so I cannot live without my glasses. Everything becomes fuzzy when I pick them off and maybe I cannot find the exit of my home. They just make the world clear to me.
My cell phone: I am not living alone. I have friends and families. So cell phone as the connection between us is important to me and I need to keep it alive or they will worry about my safety.
The portable hard drive: Another world we live in nowadays is composed by computer and internet. And virtual data is as important as my life in a way. I have 10gb pictures, 10gb movies and 110gb songs in the hard drive. It is hard to collect all of them, which takes a very lone time. So I must take my another"life" with me.
My wallet: All of my bank cards and identity cards are in my wallet, it is most valuable and significant to catch. 

When I finished the image and the explaination above, I stop moving forward and go back to view my work and think it over again. I find that the objects I choose are common and ordinary, everyone have them and they are important to everyone, which means I am not a unconventional person and I am very practical. Then two of the five items are electronics, it shows that I rely on internet and computer life very much. Then I catch a book, a religionary book, though I am young and I am interested in many different things, I have my faith. I think these items show my identity well.
Maybe they do not show my interest detailed and classified. And I have many things memoriable and meaningful but I cannot take them with me because of their weight and volume, so the viewers cannot know more about me.

  Every coin has two sides. We cannot live without electricity in everyday lives, it is the source to generate all the power we need. But it is also dangerous if people touch it directly, which will let people die. The article "The feet in smoke" written by John Jeremiah Sullivan tells us a story about the author's brother gets an electric shock and revive from death. From this article, I realize that people should be careful when they use electronic devices. And I am moved when his brother wakes up after hearing the author's whisper, a miracle happens due to the power of love between the brothers. And I like the way the author records the recovery of his brother day by day, which makes the experience more truly.

  I usually walk to class every morning. Path is shown above in the picture. The idea of my product is I just put the google map on the bottom layer and choose 5 five unique pictures that I pay attention to on the way to class and put each picture beside their corresponding point on the map and give each one a explanation. I love the smell of the lawn of the academic breath sel brings to me. And I love the sunshine every morning, it makes everything fresh and lovely. At the first day of class, I was confused of the position of the entrance of the stadium, because osu map just tell you where the stadium is but it will not tell you the entrance of the building. I just walk along the stadium for about half circle and then see one get out of the stadium. This is the first time I take class in osu stadium,it is a good experience.

Wexner review

  I went to Wexner center this Sunday with my friends. When I first came to OSU as a freshman, I was interested in the shape of the building. It brings me a feeling of art. But I do not know it is like a art museum until I visit it this Sunday. And there seem to be a show for an artist called David Smith that day, almost all the artworks are made by David in the center. Unfortunately I cannot understand the artworks, maybe that is why I cannot become an artist? I think the artworks are too modern and too abstract for me, I cannot tell what are they and what are the main ideas they want to express. Maybe there are not correct ways to understand them, everyone will get his answer from the products. Like the words said"There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes". There are notes besides every artwork to show the name of it, the father of it and the meaning of it( not exactly). One of the artworks impressed me is called box, it is a room with no light but just a screen playing movie. I like the feeling sitting in the room and watch a movie, it brings me inner peace. Though I do not gains much from the visiting, I think it is a good experience which makes me think much.

 The same of the two experience: When I see beautiful and memoriable scenes, I take pictures to record them.So the things in the two group of ten pictures are all lovely in my view.

 The difference of two experience: When taking the first ten pictures, I have no idea about how to posit the scene in my camera, I just try to include all the things I like into the picture. It is a very simple way. But in taking the second ten pictures, I have got some knowledge from class, and I try to take pictures in different ways.

 I like the second experience because it makes my pcitures more formal and looks better. When you follow some rules, you will always make things better. 

 I like the ant view picture most. Because in the process I photograph it, I see the world in a new angle which I never did. In that moment, I feel like I am an ant and I can realize the life of an ant. It is a good experience!

  It is a excited experience to read the article called"Nipple Jesus" written by Nick Hornby. When I begin to read it, it is bored at first, but after someone who tears the picture and make it up by breast of women from old magazines, I find it is an interesting story. I like one of the opinions of the artist of that painting, a painting that makes people angry, in another word, a painting that someone dislike is a good painting. And I like the trope the author use to describe the sex and Christinity by "Censored  Artwork". To sum up, it is a good story, I like it and I learn many new written skills and reading logic from it.
  For something I dislike, I am a Christian and I feel uncomfortable about the event happens in the story though it is just a fictive one.

  Big ideas are important in lives. When we do art works we should consider something different from others to make audience surprised by our products, and the "something different" means the big idea of your own. In this article, I like the way the author talks about big idea. He compares it to theme and subject matter, two closed concepts to big idea, and make the meaning of big idea more clearly.
  I enjoy reading use of big idea in the last part of the article, but that makes me interest in how to generate a good big idea? How do we know if our big ideas are good enough to use?

  I am in art 367 this quarter, and we just discussed visual art last class, about connotations and denotations. And this article helps me understand there two concepts deeper. I think artist should make an interpretation following their products to explain the connotations he wants to deliver to the audience by the denotations. And I will make good explaination after my products.
 This article is pretty straight forward, I have no questions on it.
 

Blog 2: Response to the Kidd, Hickey and Weschler articles

  In this article, the author focuses on some comparisons between existing concepts, like left to right, bottom to top and big and small. In my opinion, the author wants to tell us we should have more than one points of view but not just follow the inertial thinking when we consider things.
  I find this article is hard to read, I have no idea who the enemy is at the beginning of reading and I am still not sure what is the main idea of the article. In another word, I do not know if I understand his idea correctly. I think it is better for him to add a paragraph to explain his main  idea, which will help readers understand.

  I find this replay on youtube and watch it no less than ten times, it is so amazing and I think it is one of the most excited moment in basketball history. Thanks to the author to let me see such a good replay.
  For something I dislike in this article. I think the followed part of the history of basketball is boring. which makes the article look like wikipedia. Well, at least for me, I hate history, so I will fall into sleep reading so long a history of basketball without any personal ideas from the author.

  I am interested in this one because it is about modern computer technology. Computing abilities of human are limited but wisdom of human is unlimited. By computer, human can make many of their unimaginable thoughts come true. And simulating a human face by software is like a magic, I hope I will see a real film with no real human actors but all digital "stars".
  "We ask ourselves that question every day," one of the guys at ILM acknowledged, laughing. "Fortunately, it's not our job to answer it." I am interested in this question but the author does not explain more on it in the followed parts. Can digital characters replace real human actors to the end?

Blog 1: Introduce myself

  I am Wenhan Cao. English name is Eric. I am from Qingdao, China. I am a nerd, so coming to class, taking class and going back home is whay I do everyday in school. I used to play tennis but I have not played that for half year. My interest out of school(at home) are 1.all eletronic products,2.Japanese animations and 3. metal music.
  For the first one, the news of eletronic products everyday make me feel there is still a connection between the world and me. And I feel I am developping with the world from getting more and more information of the products.
  For the second one, it is totally a different world between the animation world and our real world. There are no pretense, cheating or mammonism but just all beauty things.
  For the third one, I like almost all metal songs especially death metal. This is a part of my life and I think I will die if I live without these songs. Listenning music is the biggest part of my everyday life.
